Light-Based Skin Care Backed by More Than 30 Years of Experience

Dr. Sonya J. Merriman has led Plastic Surgery Associates of Valdosta since 1992. As a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, she brings a surgeon's understanding of skin to every medspa protocol. Our certified laser practitioners perform BBL treatments under her oversight in our QUAD A-accredited facility.

What Is a BBL Photofacial?

A BBL photofacial is a pulsed-light treatment made by Sciton. Unlike a laser, which emits a single wavelength, BroadBand Light delivers a range of wavelengths. Filters narrow that light to target specific concerns, such as brown pigment or the red of small blood vessels.

When the light is absorbed by pigment or blood vessels, it heats them. The body then clears away the damaged pigment and vessels over the following weeks. BBL HEROic is the newest generation of Sciton's BBL platform. BBL may also benefit skin at a deeper level.

In a Stanford University pilot study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, researchers found that skin aging altered the expression of 2,265 genes. After BBL treatment, 1,293 of those genes became more similar to their expression in youthful skin, and participants showed less fine wrinkling and abnormal pigmentation.

What Is Forever Clear BBL for Acne?

Forever Clear BBL is Sciton's BBL protocol designed specifically for active acne. The treatment uses three passes of light:

  1. Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria in the pores.
  2. Yellow light reduces inflammation and redness from breakouts.
  3. Infrared light supports the skin's natural healing process.

Light-based acne treatment has scientific support. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, blue and red light can treat pimples, although light therapy rarely clears acne on its own. A peer-reviewed review of lasers and light devices in acne management found favorable outcomes for intense pulsed light and blue light therapies. For that reason, our team often pairs Forever Clear BBL with a medical-grade skincare routine.

Who Is a Good Candidate for BBL?

Ideal candidates for a BBL photofacial have lighter to medium skin tones with sun damage, redness, or uneven tone. Because pulsed light targets pigment, patients with darker skin or a recent tan need careful evaluation. Your practitioner may recommend Moxi instead, since Moxi targets water rather than pigment.

Forever Clear BBL suits teens and adults with mild to moderate inflammatory acne. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that visible light does not treat blackheads, whiteheads, acne cysts, or nodules, so patients with severe cystic acne may need medical treatment alongside light therapy.

Benefits of BBL and Forever Clear BBL

BBL treatments offer several benefits for patients with sun damage, redness, or acne:

  • Fades sun spots, age spots, and freckles
  • Reduces visible redness and small facial veins
  • Treats active acne breakouts without oral medications
  • Softens red marks left behind by acne
  • Improves overall tone and radiance
  • Treats the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands
  • Requires little to no downtime

What to Expect During BBL Treatment

Your BBL Consultation and Cost

Your visit begins with a skin assessment and review of your medical history, medications, and sun exposure. Some medications increase light sensitivity, so bring a current list. BBL cost depends on the treatment area, the protocol, and the number of sessions. Acne protocols are typically planned as a series.

Your BBL Treatment Day

Your practitioner will cleanse the skin and provide eye protection. A cool gel is applied, and the BBL handpiece is placed against the skin. Each pulse feels like a warm snap, similar to a rubber band. The handpiece cools the skin throughout treatment to keep you comfortable.

BBL Recovery and Results

After a BBL photofacial, skin may look pink for a few hours. Treated brown spots usually darken over the next several days, then flake away within one to two weeks. Redness from vessels fades gradually.

Most patients see results after one session, with a series of treatments giving the best outcome. Forever Clear BBL often requires several sessions to bring active acne under control. Daily sunscreen is essential to protect results.
