Love the Way Your Skin Looks
There are a couple of questions that my patients ask me fairly regularly. “Your skin looks so good, what have you done to make it look like that?” And “Have you ever had any surgery on your face?” The answer to the first question is sunscreen, Retin-A, Obagi skin care, peels, Photofacials, Botox and Juvederm. The answer to the second is no, but I most certainly will at some point.
Using sunscreen is the most important thing you can do to prevent premature aging of your skin. If I could only convince the teenagers and young people out there that they are doing bad and irreversible damage to their skin when they insist on having a tan, I could prevent a lot of premature aging and skin cancers. I hear pretty frequently “I don’t tan my face.” And that is good, but when you get in your 40’s and 50’s and see the brown spots and wrinkles on your arms, legs, back, abdomen and chest, you will wish you had treated the rest of your skin like your face.
Retin-A has been proven to improve fine lines and to help build collagen. Everyone should use Retin-A unless you are allergic to it. Starting in your 20’s is not too early.
Medical grade skin care products like Obagi, Nia, Murad, etc have ingredients that have been proven to prevent and improve fine lines and improve skin texture and color. The medical grade products use higher concentrations and are more effective than over the counter products. Medical grade facial peels and microdermabrasion can add to the results you get with the daily products. Starting in your 20’s is not too early.
Botox and fillers are very powerful products when used by an expert injector with extensive knowledge about the anatomy and function of the face. Botox can help reduce wrinkles in areas where muscle movement make the wrinkles such as the forehead, glabella (frown lines), lips and crow’s feet. It can also be used to help create a chemical brow lift, widen the eyes and help the mouth corners not to turn down. Start when you can see the lines form when you smile, frown or raise your forehead. Don’t wait until the lines are there when you don’t smile, frown or raise your forehead. Fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra etc can fill hollowed areas such as temples, fill nasolabial folds, tear troughs and even give the same results as a cheek implant. Make sure you choose a skilled injector with a lot of experience and knowledge.
Photofacials and other laser and light based procedures are safe and effective in treating sun damage and environmental damage to the skin.
And another thing…….Don’t smoke!! It is right up there with the sun when it comes to damaging and aging your skin.
By using these products and procedures, I have probably put off surgical interventions like facelifts, eyelid lifts and brow lifts for a few years. But when the time comes…………….
